The Sociology and Anthropology Department of IU South Bend was chartered just last year as the Iota of Indiana Chapter of Lambda Alpha, the National Collegiate Honors Society for Anthropology. Established in 1968, Lambda Alpha is a national honor society founded to promote the study of anthropology. The name Lambda Alpha is composed of the initial letters of the Greek words Logos Anthropou, meaning the study of humans. As an honor society, Lambda Alpha acknowledges superiority and provides incentives for exceptional performance by granting certificates of accomplishment. To be eligible, students must have: -completed at least 12 credit hours in anthropology -have an anthropology GPA of 3.0, and -have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 For more information on Lambda Alpha and the benefits of membership, please visit the National Office website. Our chapter accepts new members once a year in the Spring semester. If you meet the membership requirements and would like to join, please see Prof. VanderVeen, DW 2289. You should print out a transcript, calculate your GPAs, and bring that to your meeting. You will then fill out a membership card (available from Dr. Jay VanderVeen, DW 2289), write a check for $25 dues (lifetime membership for only one payment! includes cost of certificate and ID card!) to Lambda Alpha, then give your card and check to Dr. VanderVeen (DW 2289) for submission to the national office. (For an additional $25, you may also order a Lambda Alpha honor stole that may be worn with your graduation gown, or for $10, you may order a Lambda Alpha lapel pin.) The faculty and new members will have an event to celebrate this accomplishment later this spring. PAPERWORK AND MONEY DUE BY FEBRUARY 20 THIS YEAR.
