The South African National Blood Service is appealing to the public to make a special effort to visit their nearest blood donor centre to donate blood in an attempt to keep blood stocks at desired levels during the month of September. Many blood drives that were scheduled more than six weeks in advance are being cancelled at the last minute as a result of increased strike action in the various labour sectors. Blood drives that don’t cancel unfortunately don’t perform optimally due to the impact of the strike action on the workload. SANBS is an emergency service and during times of labour action or crisis, patients still require blood as part of their medical treatment, and there is no substitute for human blood. During the first three weeks of August 2013, the Eastern Cape collected only 90% of target, creating a deficit of 10% which are expected to increase. Nationally, SANBS has to collect 3 000 units of blood every day and the Eastern Cape contributes 300 units of blood per day to this big total. Blood stocks changes constantly and is dependent on the demand from hospitals on the one side and the supply on the other which relies on the generosity and goodwill of voluntary non –remunerated blood donors. Any donors, long-lost donors or potential donors are encouraged to visit sanbs.org.za to locate their closest blood donor centre or the toll free number can be used for the same purpose 0800 11 90 31.
