The Spirit of Giving: (from left to right) Lauren, Miles, Oliver and Senior Airman Richard Williams stand in awe of the holiday gifts given to them by members of Williams’ unit, the 58th Maintenance Group, Dec. 23 at Kirtland. MXG members applied for the Williams family to be adopted under an Administrative Office of Access under the National Nuclear Security Administration program, which provides gifts to a New Mexico family each holiday season. Eight month-old Oliver suffers from Biliary Atresia, and has required extensive treatment, creating an extreme financial hardship for the Williams family. Both parents expressed their gratitude for the gifts, though they are still hoping for the greatest gift of all – a liver transplant for Oliver. Lauren said that doctors have estimated the wait time for a transplant at three to six months. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, one organ donor can save up to eight lives on average. Currently, there are 123,955 people are waiting for an organ in the U.S., and an average of 18 people die each day waiting for a transplant.
