The Sunday fixture against the leagues top flight team of Mears - TopicsExpress

The Sunday fixture against the leagues top flight team of Mears Ashby had an end of term feel to it with both teams looking at the end of a long summer campaign. With Riz Alam unable to start this morning Jack Sharif stepped in. The sun was out and with it getting warmer and warmer the Legends were put into bat. Opening with Elijah Glover and Ben Willingham - the million dollar pair - runs were coming easily against Mears Ashbys 1st team bowlers. It took 10 overs to remove our openers in quick succession and that brought the father and son combo of Kristian Barnatt and Mike Barnatt to the crease. Putting on some good runs, Kris edged one to the keeper which brought Alex Walker, the new city gent, to the crease. As in the last game of last season Alex was in imperious form and him and Mike put on a partnership of over 150 runs which was a wonderful masterclass in batting against a determined opposition. Alex perished at 102 which brought the local gun-slinger and beamer bowling Ishtaq Hussain. In a subdued innings Ish added a moderate 35 to the total and the Legends finished on 255 with Mike getting a wonderful guard of honor in his last game before retirement. As Ron Dennis said to Aryton Senna when he was leaving McLaren for Williams - You can still change your mind But Mike like Senna and Thatcher was not for turning !!! The total was a large one and Nick Walker made the task even harder by taking a wicket with the very first ball of the match. Rob Willis then took the next 3 wickets in a destructive spell of swing bowling that had Mears Ashby reeling at 58 for 4. Jack and Ben took the next 3 wickets and with Rob skittling the next 2, Mears Ashby were bowled out for 145 and the ginger ninja had his first league 5-fer. What a brilliant come-back from the previous week. A big thank you had to go to Elijah Glover who selflessly gave up his chance of winning the teams bowling prize and kept exceptionally well for the whole innings. Today was a showcase for all that is amazing at Horton House and the Legends. Fathers playing with sons, brother playing together, old and new friends enjoying each others company and banter. Hopefully these are enjoyable memories that we can take into next season and well beyond cricket. A big thanks to Shaun Patel who scored today and to Lee Willis for umpiring. Signing off we finished 4th in the division and considering we were in the relegation zone at the beginning of the season as a team we have done amazing well to stay in and compete in this new division. Thank you for all the parents who have supported the team this year - Jo Glover. Louise Sharif, Emma Charter, Richard Kilby and all those I have missed out. For all the Legends who have played this season that could not make the last game Will Charter, Harish Patel, PK Senior, Cliff Shelley, Temoor Alam, Rubin Das, Alastair Bowden, Francis Cundell - thank you for all your contributions. “Teamwork: I find it fascinating that a snowflake, by itself, can be so delicate; but when they team-up, they can close-down an entire city.”
