The TacoLu family is crushed at the news of the tragic death of Dan Stein. He is a former Lu Staffer, and still a huge part of the lives of many of us here. His passing has left a void in us all. When I was young, my mother would say, after reading about this kind of tragedy, that there could be nothing worse than a mother outliving her children. We were perplexed, as young kids, at the notion of not wanting to live longer (duh), and it wasn’t until I became a parent that it made any sense. Mother knows best, they say, and never more than in this regard. Our hearts go out to the family of Dan Stein. A young man, taken from his family and friends far too soon, Dan is survived by his brother and his parents. Dan not only leaves his family behind, but an extraordinarily large number of people who love him like a brother! One look at his Facebook page tells the story of how many people are blown away, amazed and perplexed by his passing. Many had seen him that day--and only hours before, held him in their arms on the Fourth of July... The thing that is most significant to me is that these kids--this tight circle of friends--have already lost loved ones; they’ve buried close friends already. I know it happens--but this is lightning striking twice to many of these who know and love Dan Stein. No one--especially at this age--deserves this. The Fourth of July is indelibly marred for them all. What was once a gigantic, epic, daylong celebration is shattered. Someday, they’ll celebrate Independence again; celebrate all things ‘Merica. But--and for who knows how long, on the Fourth of July, they’ll mourn the death of Dan Stein. Like Dan, his friends are strong and smart; I hope it won’t be too long until they’ll celebrate his life, remembering him fondly and forever, on the Fourth. Rest in Peace, Dan.
