The Talk ’N Text Tropang Texters defeated the Guam men’s national basketball team, 94-66, in a preseason tuneup on Saturday, October 4 at the University of Guam Field House in Guam. The Texters, who finished second in the Philippine Basketball Association’s Commissioner’s Cup conference last season, fielded Gilas Pilipinas players Jayson Castro and the recently reacquired Jay Washington but Jimmy Alapag and Ranidel De Ocampo didn’t make the trip. Guam held a 41-34 lead at the half before a 33-point third blew the game wide open for the Texters. The Guam team, which was the runner up to Australia in the 1999 FIBA Oceania Championship, is coached by former player EJ Calvo, who is the CEO of mixed martial arts organization Pacific Xtreme Combat, which frequently does shows in the Philippines. Back home in the Philippines, Kia Sorentos playing coach Manny Pacquiao tasted defeat in his PBA debut, losing 88-77 to fellow expansion team Blackwater Elite at the Alonte Sports Arena in Binan, Laguna. Pacquiao scored 1 point, grabbed a rebound and turned the ball over twice. Reil Cervantes of Kia led all scorers with 23 points, to go with 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks. Alex Nuyles scored 18 while Sunday Salvacion contributed 15 points. The two teams will meet once more in the PBA season-opener on October 19 at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.
