The Three Part of Man = ARE SPIRIT, SOUL AND BODY: Pneuma, Greek word for spirit. It means breath. The lung disease pneumonia takes its name from that term. The spirit is that part of man not fully functional because of sin. When Adam sin, all mankind sin and die spiritually (Gen 2:16,17), separated from God. It doesnt function properly in harmony with Gods spirit. When man repents and receive Christ as his Savior (born-again, born of the Holy Spirit) his spirit begins to respond and interact with Gods Spirit. The spirit of man is now aware or conscious of God - God- awareness. It is made alive by Gods Holy Spirit at salvation, able to receive and understand message and revelations from God. He can pray to God, worship, have communion and fellowship with God, etc. Psuche, Greek word for soul. Psychology the study of the soul (mind) of man. The soul is the part of man which is aware or conscious of himself - self-awareness. It is the center of the ego or personality. The functions of the soul are as follows: Reason: to think (meditate, conceive) Emotion: to feel (have passion, affection) Volition: to will (decide) Soma, Greek term for body. Psychosomatic (soul-body) . Body is the part of man which is aware of and reacts with the outside world - world awareness. The functions of the body are as follows: Reception - information is received from the world by way of the senses (eyes, ears, nose, touch, etc.) Reaction - the body reacts through the motor (muscle, nerves) systems by words and actions. Expression - the body express to the outside world the thoughts, feelings and decisions of the soul. Body receive information from the outside world by way of its physical senses, this information is then relay or perceived by the soul to interpret, judge and understand what we have received. To do so we must rely on our reason and our memory. How we think and feel about the situation to determine what action to make. Our volition or will now comes into play. We will then do or say something in response to information received from the outside and express our response from soul (inward) to outward body into outside world. However, if the spirit is alive he will come into play. From the body (outward part body) to soul (inward part of the body) to spirit (spirit part of the body) to the Holy Spirit of God. Vice-versa. From God - Holy Spirit - mans spirit (spirit body) - soul (inward body) - body (outward body) - express to outside world whatever he received from God. The natural (soulish) man does not receive the things of Gods Spirit. To him they are foolish. He cannot understand them because they can only be judged spiritually (1Cor 2:14). It is Gods purpose that all the functions of mans soul come under the Lordship (governance) of the Holy Spirit. The fruits, gifts, and graces given by the Holy Spirit enable a Christian to grow up in the Lord Jesus Christ and start obeying God and His Word. If we grieve the Holy Spirit by natural (carnal or flesh) soulish ways of living, we will hold back the flow of Gods Spirit through our lives. We then full back into our old (soulish-sensual, sinful) way of life bitter than before (Rom 8:5; Gal 5:16-26).
