The Thumb instruction set may expend performance, since some operations require more instructions. Although 2 Thumb instructions may be fetched at a time, still only 1 instruction is executed per cycle. Thumb is featured to improve code-density instead of performance. Nevertheless if the bus width is less than 32 bits, it does allow increased performance. The disadvantage remains with Thumb-2 involved, whose aim is stated with performance approaching ARM instruction set.
