The Tigers snapped a 3 game losing streak tonight beating the Blue Jays 7-6. In doing so they bucked some disturbing trends that we had previously talked about. That is scoring runs for Fister, scoring runs on the road and scoring runs late in games. Oh and one more winning a 1 run game. This game appeared to have disaster spelled all over it. The Jays scored 4 runs in the 1st inning. They had 3 runs in and a runner on second with no outs. Fister did give up one more run in the inning and ended up facing 9 batters but was able to finish the inning. The Tigers then quickly bounced back themselves. They scored 6 runs in the 2nd inning. The inning was highlighted by an Avila 2 run double and a Miguel Cabrera 3 run home run. The Jays starter, Chien-Ming Wang, did not get out of the second inning. It then became a meet the Toronto pitching staff for the Tigers. The Jays showed some pushback of their own when they scored 2 in the bottom of the 2nd to tie the game at 6 all. Doug Fister was able to stay in the game and battle his way pitching 6 innings. The Tigers meanwhile were having a difficult time with a host of Jay’s relievers. Their best chance came in the 6th when with a runner on 2nd, the Jays, as many other teams have tried, walked Cabrera intentionally to get to Fielder. Fielder has foiled this strategy many times and made a bid to do the same tonight. He hit a line drive to left center that Rajai Davis came in and had to go down to one knee to keep the Tigers off the board. Al Alburquerque came on to pitch the 8th. The only spot to the inning was a Bautista walk but there was no other damage. The in the 8th the Tigers would get the go ahead run. Infante got on a single. He was sacrificed to 2nd. He moved to 3rd on a long fly out to center off of Jackson’s at bat. Torii Hunter then got his 4th hit of the game, an infield single. He hit a shot up the middle, it bounced off the pitcher. Jose Reyes would pick it up and throw to 1st but Hunter just beat the throw. Smiley came on and pitched a perfect 8th. It was then up to Beniot to finish the game. He pitched a perfect 9th for his 6th save. It was the biggest comeback of the year for the Tigers. Alburquerque got the win. The only negative of the night was that Cabrera back stiffened up in the 8th after his last at bat and he had to leave the game in the 9th. Early indication is it is nothing serious. Let’s hope so as he is one player the Tigers can ill afford to lose.
