The Tortoise N the Air!!! Just yesterday Angel Flight orchestrated a very different kind of mission thanks to the Georgia Aviation Association Inc. and the compassion of general aviators across the state for joining together to help an endangered species. We transported Pierce, a 16lb, rehabilitated juvenile green sea turtle to her new home in Dubuque Iowa. Pierce was rescued in Little Cumberland Island and had been severely injured when she was struck by a boat causing permanent damage to her spinal cord and rear flippers. As a result of this injury she can no longer return to the wild, therefore she will need special care and physical therapy which she will receive at the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium by her new caretaker Ben Houghton. This operation was organized by Leslie Weinstein founder of True-Lock LLC and board member of the University of Florida’s Archie Carr Sea Turtle Research Center. Many thanks to Volunteer AF Pilots Bob Krueger, Bill Bailey, and Jerry Latvala for participating in this unique mission and transporting her from the Georgia Sea Turtle Center The Angel Flight Family would like to wish Pierce the very best and hope that she will enjoy her new home.
