The Truworths group honours “Madiba” Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, by making R3,750,000 donations to two hospitals in his name. The hospitals will be refurbished during 2014 and 2015. As we all know yesterday in Qunu in the Eastern Cape the state funeral of our beloved Madiba, the leading moral icon of the century, took place. How proud we should all be to have lived through his lifetime, the remarkable transition of his own life, that of our country and perhaps that of the world, to a better and more honourable future! It is therefore appropriate at this time to make a donation of R2,0000,000 (R2,0 million) to a deserving hospital in the Eastern Cape so that it can be refurbished during 2014. This donation will be dedicated to the memory of “MADIBA” NELSON ROLIHLAHLA MANDELA 1918-2013. This donation will be over and above any donation we would have made in the normal course of our Sustainability program. We will ensure that the hospital to which we choose to make the donation is dedicated to the name of “Madiba” and that it fits our criteria of serving large communities of disadvantaged South Africans. In addition a R1.75 million donation in honour of Madiba will be made as a contribution to the refurbishment of the Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital in Pretoria which is planned to be completed by June 2014. This is part of the Truworths group’s on-going campaign to support the refurbishment of hospitals and health care facilities and which service disadvantaged communities across South Africa. The hospital is situated on the western outskirts of Pretoria in the suburb of Atteridgeville and is utilised by the University of Pretoria as a training institution for its Faculty of Health Sciences and serves the 75 000 people in the surrounding communities. “We believe that this and previous contributions will greatly assist in the provision of better quality healthcare to the many hundreds of thousands of patients who use these facilities. We hope this will make a significant difference to their lives as well as the doctors and staff who currently work under very difficult circumstances,” says Michael Mark, CEO of Truworths. To date, we have assisted five hospitals by making almost R7,000,000 in charitable donations in different regions since 2010. The five hospitals are: · Somerset Hospital in the Western Cape R2-million in 2010 · Mitchells Plain Community Health Clinic in the Western Cape R1-million in 2010 · Hanover Park Peri-Natal Clinic in the Western Cape R275 000 in 2011 · Leratong Hospital in the West Rand, Gauteng R1,5-million in 2012 · Itireleng Community Health clinic in Dobsonville Soweto R1,9-million in 2012/13
