The U.S. diplomatic relations with Abyssinia was the third oldest - TopicsExpress

The U.S. diplomatic relations with Abyssinia was the third oldest diplomatic liaisons with the African continent. The first diplomatic contact was the Eaton Mission to the Bashaw of Tripoli, on the aftermath of the Barbary War in 1805. The second one was with Liberia. Some writers argue that the relationship with Ethiopia was the second one after Liberia. Maintaining that Liberia is the creation of the U.S., Ambassador Aurelia Brazeal, argues that the U.S.-Ethiopian contact was the first tie the U.S. formed with Africa (see, Skinner, 2003, 1).
