The US has endorsed and will participate in planned NATO-Ukraine war games slated for later this July in Lviv. Putin is most likely to make some spirited noise and protest the games as a pretext for soon-to-follow, active American engagement in Ukraine, though Lviv is further west and relatively removed from Russias Ukrainian border to the east. How the US, the EU and others dispose themselves to Putins noise and protest will go a long way in determining events to follow. No sane human being who knows the cost of war wants war, but sometimes, war is the cheaper route in life, limb and lucre to fending off a more costly and (sadly but true) inevitable calamity. In cash and kind, the cost of postponing the evil day in Ukraine may be much higher than facing the menace early, firmly and decisively. Diplomacy is not, and has never been, a cure-all to all political differences. Its appplication has to be well-thought out, judicious and strategic, taking into account all the long and short ends of the choice. In this situation solely engineered by Russias Putin, the world must read the riot act to Putin and his pet dream of a born-again USSR. To argue that an overwhelming majority of elected representatives of Russians support Putins Crimea action is to lose sight of the packaged lemon sale of democraziness going on in Russia. That variant of craziness is a recycled old movie no one wishes to see again. So, the world must shut the theater and shut it NOW. I gave a similar caution when todays ongoing Egyptian carnage was a remote possibility to many.
