The Village of Old Age, by Walter de la Mare, 1896. A Robert - TopicsExpress

The Village of Old Age, by Walter de la Mare, 1896. A Robert Aickman story, long before Mr. Aickman started writing? It certainly feels that way. A young man arrives at a village in search of his friend, and finds everyone there depressed, worn out, ready for death. Even the children are tired and pale.... The style here is 1890s artificial, nowhere near as assured as it would later become, but the story has that dreamlike atmosphere, that hard-to-put-your-finger-on-it quality of daylit realism combined with brooding twilit fantasy, that would gleam from the later work of de la Mare... and of Robert Aickman.
