The Volcano in East Japan erupted yesterday. The Mt Ontake, the second highest volcano (3067 metres) in Japan, which is located in the border of Gifu and Nagano prefecture, started to emit toxic gases and fumes since its eruption on yesterday morning. This eruption started in almost seven years after there were minor eruption in 2007. The Mt Ontake still emits fumes now and the volcanic fumes have risen several hundred metres high in the sky. When the Mt Ontake started to erupt yesterday, there were a lot of mountain hikers enjoying the beautiful autumn weather and the scarlet autumn leaves. This lead to several casualties: Nagano Police said that at least 30 people died of cardiac arrest and more than 50 people injured due to high temperature fumes and fallen rocks. Nagano Police also announced that among the injured, 16 found unconscious. The Japan Meteorological Agency explained that even though they noticed several minor volcanic earthquakes since 29 August. 52 volcanic earthquake were observed on 10 Sep and 85 on 11 Sep. But these phenomena soon disappeared from 12 September and on the day the volcano erupted, only 6 volcanic earthquakes were observed. This is why the authorities did not restrict the entry, the JMA explained. Currently, the volcano alert level 3 were issued among Nagano, Gifu and other areas. Requiescat in pace.
