The WA Office of Road Safety’s Share the Road campaign continues - TopicsExpress

The WA Office of Road Safety’s Share the Road campaign continues to roll out, targeting all road users to be more aware of their behaviours and attitudes with the goal of improving safety for everyone who uses WA roads. The graphics have been widely disseminated, there are radio ads being given air times and there are handbooks available that detail both common sense approaches to road safety as well as the legislative approach. What do you think of the campaign? Queensland is in the midst of a 2 year trial of minimum overtaking distance legislation (amygillett.org.au/tmrads). NSW is entering phase 3 of the AGF’s It’s a two-way street campaign (itsatwowaystreet.org.au), which has now also been adopted by Tasmania (cyclesafe.gofundraise.au/cms/tasmaniagovernment). The ACT Govt has said it will pursue a legislative trial similar to Qld (amygillett.org.au/actametrematters). Importantly, in WA there is currently legislation before Parliament calling for greater protection of bike riders. The Road Traffic (Keeping Safe Distances from Bicycles) Amendment Bill, introduced to by Lynn MacLaren Greens MLC WA, mirrors the legislation now in place in Qld, soon to be in place in the ACT and is a central theme of the campaigns underway in NSW and Tasmania. We think the WA campaign is great, and it’s encouraging to see a Government give some focus to the road’s more vulnerable users. But we’d like to see more action taken. If you’re from WA, we encourage you to get in touch with your local member (you can find them here: parliament.wa.gov.au/parliament/memblist.nsf/WAllMembers?openform) and ask them what they themselves are doing to improve bike rider safety.
