The White Salmon Art Council is pleased to announce that water color artist Bill Sturman is going to be at the Art & Wine Fusion on July 27th in White Salmon. Here is what Bill has to say about his watercolors. I am totally enthralled with transparent watercolor pigments!!! I love the transparency of the color as well as the unexpected textures that are produced as the water carries the pigments over and into the paper. I developed this interest by looking at a lot of art – in books, museums, shows and galleries – and then by taking several watercolor classes and workshops. I have been painting regularly for the last twelve years, since retiring from my career as a community college instructor, teaching primarily the science courses (anatomy and physiology, nutrition, microbiology) for aspiring allied health professionals. The subject matter that has captured my interest the most is “close-ups of nature” – flowers, fruits, foliage, birds, butterflies, clouds, etc. However, I have also enjoyed creating atmospheric portraits of our northwest landscapes. Arranging these subjects into interesting compositions is a continuing challenge and one which is a basic part of converting a rectangle of paper into a creation which holds the viewer’s interest, even after multiple viewings. I am most attracted to simple compositions, ones that have relatively few objects and a single area of focus. In the same vein, I am also attracted to compositions which have a relatively limited range of colors and a dominant cool or warm tone, rather that a broad mix of colors and tones. I am actively involved in the Hood River, OR Columbia Center for the Arts, regularly displaying my work at its Columbia Art Gallery. I am on the Gallery Committee and have served as its chair for many years. I also typically display my work at The Dalles Art Center in The Dalles, OR. I am a life member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon.
