The Work Produced is Recognized but Rarely, the Producer I have - TopicsExpress

The Work Produced is Recognized but Rarely, the Producer I have worked and instructed in many of our Tertiary Institutions from UPNG, DWU, IBS, Jubilee University Project (Jubilee Institute of Higher Learning), UNITECH. The Pay is terrible and conditions of employment are inadequate (just enough) to keep ones head above water. The work one puts in to produce qualitative lectures and educate the next generation is a real challenge. Staffs work under strenuous conditions...and often, using their own resources. I have taught a UNITECH within the Department of Business Studies without a PC, a laptop, and text books - all are rarely available. Academic Staffs go out of their way to use their own resources to prepare lessons to educate children. I did all I could using my own resources, and I find at the end, only the work out put is recognized and not the person who produced outstanding lecturers to students. Go ask the students the quality of material and teaching - it all comes from my private resources. And, might I add, I am not a full time staff. I do not want to be because I prefer to do private Consultancy work at my own time and where, and when it is necessary. But the knowledge gained, I must share with the upcoming...and I have a passion for that namely, imparting knowledge. I am not interested in power, prestige and glamour - those who want it can have it. My mission is to share knowledge with the new generation and cultivate them...period..! In DBS (UNITECH) power goes off and all comes to a stop. The back-up Genset has been dysfunctional for 14 years now and prolonging.... Yet, over the years, despite all budgets handed down, no new generator could be purchased. Obviously, all government institutions of higher learning face the same pattern of service decline across the board in PNG. I have taught at DWU and set up the IR program there...they are by far the best tertiary institution to-date in terms of resource -back up to teaching and delivery of academic materials. What is and has always being more troubling for me is the Student Gradings at the end of each semester. Students struggle so hard, day and night spending a little of the resources they have to conduct research papers and earn the marks they so rightfully deserve. Yet, Departmental Academic Committees and the AB see it fit to vary results (moderation process), reduce by 10 or 15 marks to suit average marks set by the institution. What right has the institution got to change students marks and grades? What has become of our government institutions of higher learning? The government demands higher quality of learning but the academics are not there...they have left for greener pastures. The service back up to quality learning is not there. The methodologies of learning and student appraisal system for marks and grading needs a total overhaul. Students are denied the marks they rightly deserve. Why the moderation processes to reduce marks? Staff struggle for text books, internet services and name it...! It is a problem year in, and year out...so, what do we do? Do we continue producing half-baked citizens for tomorrows competitive world?
