The Zimmerman Trial - Day 1 By Ebony Poem Satcher The George Zimmerman trial began today with both sides presenting contrasting opening statement. In a fiery, yet strong, presentation, the prosecution outlined their evidence and how they intend to prove that Mr. Zimmerman is guilty of profiling, haunting, and ultimately murdering Trayvon Martin. On the other hand, the defense curiously opened their statements with a knock-knock joke that no member of the jury, or courtroom audience, found humorous. Zimmerman, for his part, seemed disconnected from the proceedings often looking like he was about to fall asleep as his lawyers presented his case. Outside the courtroom, this case continues to receive great media coverage and has created a great divide amongst observers. This case definitely has strong racial undertones, and makes you wonder how it would be perceived if Trayvon was on trial for murdering George Zimmerman. Would Trayvon be able to claim self-defense? I’m looking forward for all the facts of this case to come out and justice to be served.
