The amazing Ganoderma applanatum "Artist Conk" fungus This species is one of the larger fungi of the world (can grow up to 1 metre across) and to around 50 years. In the wild it grows as a shelf fungus on dead or living trees, the upper surface brown often due to spores that have floated upwards from the underside due to electrostatic and thermal forces (Stamets, P. 2005). The white underside bruises when touched and has been used by artists as a canvas for beautiful artwork such as by Corey Corcoran featured below. It is common and widespread in the Huon Valley in wet eucalypt forest and rainforest (Fuhrer 2009) and may be found year round.
