The author of the Marine Corps Hymn is unknown. The hymn saw widespread use by the mid-1800s. Copyright ownership of the hymn was given to the Marine Corps per certificate of registration dated 19 August 1891. Now the hymn is public domain. In 1929, the Commandant of the Marine Corps authorized the following verses From the Halls of Montezuma To the Shores of Tripoli; We fight our countrys battles On the land as on the sea; First to fight for right and freedom And to keep our honor clean; We are proud to claim the title of United States Marine. Our flags unfurled to every breeze From dawn to setting sun; We have fought in evry clime and place Where we could take a gun; In the snow of far-off Northern lands And in sunny tropic scenes; You will find us always on the job-- The United States Marines. Heres health to you and to our Corps Which we are proud to serve In many a strife weve fought for life And never lost our nerve; If the Army and the Navy Ever look on Heavens scenes; They will find the streets are guarded By United States Marines. Nov. 21, 1942, the Commandant of the Marine Corps approved a change in the words of the fourth line of the first verse to read, “In the air, on land, and sea.” Shortly after World War II, Marines began to stand at attention during the playing of The Marines’ Hymn. That tradition continues today to honor all those who have earned the title United States Marine. - copied & adapted
