The basic fundamental of our dementia programming is staging the patient. Staging drives everything you do, write, and think about that person. Staging the patient is the window to understanding. When you understand spared vs. impaired capabilities, appropriate expectations of that patient will follow. When you have appropriate expectations, youll adapt the way you interact, talk, cue, write your goals, document, everything, to match the persons capabilities. Think about this - if you write a goal that is beyond the persons capabilities, you wont meet your goal, youll discharge the patient and no one wins. So, do the right thing - learn how to stage your patient - any discipline can do this with the proper staging evaluation.
