The best father’s day present ever Fathers are special and they deserve special gifts on father’s day. All of them look forward to something special on the day because they have spent time being special all year round. Children have a way of surpassing their fathers’ expectations and this is what happened to me this father’s day. My daughter had been sick the Wednesday and the Thursday and we were considering keeping her at home on the Friday. She was having a severe running stomach, spending more time in the toilet than playing with her friends outside. That is when we decided sending such a child to school will only see us being called to take her home first thing in the morning. When Friday morning came she went to the toilet first thing and spent some time there. It confirmed to us that she was not fit for school. But when we suggested to her that she was not going to school she said “no way”. On enquiring why such a sick child would want to go to school she mentioned that the teacher had indicated that they were going to make father’s day presents on that day. She was going to school no matter what because if she did not go she would not be able to make a present for her father. That was the sweetest thing that I had heard. Some tears rolled down my eyes on realising that she was sacrificing to go to school just for me. By the way, my girl is in grade one. She is the sweetest girl there is in the world. I began to think whether I was really worth the sacrifice. What had I done to deserve such dedication? When I look at myself I think I am far from being a perfect dad, but someone loves me anyway. I quickly realised how privileged I am to have children who love me in this way. I promised myself that I will be a more deserving father from now on. How can such an incident not change me if it is going to be the best Fathers’ Day present ever? By the way, the present was kept a secret that Friday afternoon and Saturday and was presented to me on Sunday morning. It was a work of art. A card folded in form of a purple shirt and a pink tie, coloured in by herself and an inscription inside, “Happy Father’s Day, Love from Taropafadzwa.” It is a very special gift to me. It will remain on my desk at work to keep reminding me of how blessed I am to have a child like her. The brother also took time to make a present for me; another card done by his own hands, a special present to me and a constant reminder that I am loved by some special people. It will also remain on my desk like all the other presents I have received over the years and will continue to receive. I have no doubt in my heart that if he was not feeling well on the day that the class made those presents, he would have insisted on going just to make sure the special man in his life also received a present on Fathers’ day. All these cards are just reminders of the present, but the best Father’s day present is the love that ignores all pain to make sure the opportunity is not missed to show that great love. I am honoured to receive such love.
