The carriage that carried Winston Churchills coffin has been restored at the National Railway Museums site in Shildon Shildon railway museum in Co Durham unveiling the newly restored Funeral carriage that carried Sir Winston Churchills body VIEW GALLERY A parcel van that once carried Winston Churchill’s coffin on his funeral tour from London to Oxfordshire is to leave the North East ahead of the 50 year anniversary of the former prime minister’s state funeral. The Southern Railways parcel van is to make the journey from Durham, where it has been restored over the last three months, to the National Railway Museum in York to mark the commemoration of the wartime leader’s funeral ceremony. Churchill was the only statesman to be given a state funeral in the 20th-century when thousands of people stood at station platforms to witness his final journey in 1965. Now, the van is to be put on display at the museum to commemorate the event after volunteers and staff at the branch in Shildon, County Durham, worked to restore it to its condition back in 1965.
