The close of 2014 caused me to look back 50 years to 1964. After the Sixties, nothing was ever the same. • In 1964 the tonnage of chardonnay grapes was so small that it was not yet tracked by the state agricultural service; today, on average, more than 758,000 tons of chardonnay grapes are harvested each year. • In 1964 there were some 230 wineries in California; today there are nearly 4,000 in the state. • In 1964 there were fewer than five women winemakers in California and all were self-taught. No viticultural school in the U.S. had yet accepted their first woman student. • In 1964 the highest-priced California wine (Inglenook Cask Cabernet Sauvignon) was just under $5 a bottle; today Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon and Harlan Estate are both released at over $800 a bottle. HAPPY 2015 Everyone!
