The cold season is not the most ideal time to move, however it could be beneficial. Moving companies arent as booked and they usually have cheaper rates, moving truck rentals are usually easier to book also since its not as busy. But there is more to moving in the winter than booking a company or truck. A few extra tips that might help you prepare for your cold move. Keeping Everyone Safe: Be extra careful while loading your moving truck when youre dealing with colder elements. Whether you’re packing a rental truck and moving yourself, or if youve hired a moving company, make sure the areas around your home are free of ice and or snow. If necessary, use de-icing material and be sure to shovel. It’s not something you want to add to your long moving to-do list, but everyone needs to be safe while loading the truck, and when your hands are full or you are carrying something heavy, the last thing you want is to slip and fall; dropping your valuables or a heavy piece of furniture on yourself. Protect Surfaces and Stay Warm: The inside of a moving truck is un-insulated and can get very cold. Depending the item, you might need to wrap a blanket around it for protection against the cold.hot coffee Put down protective, slip-proof coverings on all areas of your floor, these will keep people from slipping on wet floors as they come in and out. If you dont have runners, large pieces of heavy cardboard are handy.. To be safe and because you want to protect your flooring for the new owner, put down some non-skid runners. Put towels by the front door to wipe away snow from the dolly wheels. Wear the appropriate clothing . It might sound like a no-brainer to put on warm clothes when moving in the cold, but your mind is on a million other things. It’s also sometimes hard to move large, heavy boxes in a winter coat, so layering is your best bet. Once you get moving youll get warmed up and the cold will disappear. The goal is to have easy mobility and to stay warm and dry. The right shoes are also important in both staying warm, and staying safe. Have hot drinks ready. Keep a coffee pot or bags of hot cocoa and hot water ready in the kitchen for people to take a break and warm up. Buy some disposable cups and spoons so you dont have to worry about clean up. Be extra careful when driving: If you’re driving a rental truck in the snow or ice, take extra precautions. If you arent used to icy roads, driving a loaded moving truck on ice and snow is a different animal. Be very careful. If you are in an area where the snow is heavy, be sure to request snow tires on your truck when you reserve it (in heavy-snow regions, snow tires are usually the norm) And make sure to frequently stop to check the vehicle and remove any built-up snow if conditions apply. For those just driving in icy conditions, make sure your tires and brakes are in good condition, all fluids are current and full, your battery is fully-charged, and the heater is working well. Check your tire treads, make sure that your tires have good tread on them so that you will not have any issues with traction and slipping on icy roads. Replace your windshield wiper blades, When driving in the winter, you don’t only have to deal with the slippery road as you might also need to deal with the falling snow, or icy rain which could affect your vision. One way to solve this issue is replacing wiper blades which are more than 6 months old to make sure that you will have the proper visibility when it is snowing or raining. Exercise extra caution when going around curves, bends or sharp turns. It is not hard to lose control of the wheel in icy conditions. A car tends to skid when your wheels slide out of control on a slippery surface. This normally happens because you’re driving too fast for the road conditions. If you ever start to skid in your vehicle, don’t panic. Instead, ease off the brake or accelerator gradually. Look and steer smoothly in the direction you want to go. Don’t over-steer or jerk your arms in the opposite direction of the skid as this could put you into a spin. It’s also important to keep an emergency kit, blankets, windshield scraper, snow shovel, sand/salt, and bottled water and snacks in your vehicle just in case. Make sure to ask about details with road side assistance so you know what to prepare for. Drive slower, leave plenty of room for braking, and use caution on overpasses and bridges.
