The consulting firm that I worked for nearly eleven years (and still work for two hours per week) is small, with about thirty employees. All our clients are in Colorado and Utah, except two consultants who are now located in suburban Washington, DC. Our Founder, our attorney and several family trusts are the owners. The Founder was my classmate at UT. He also happens to be my third cousin, although we never met before grad school. We have the same middle name. The Founder was reluctant to sell my contract to the major bank for which I had worked as a project consultant since August 2011 and on four short installations since 2005. So he set a high price, but to our surprise, the bank accepted his terms. Also to my surprise, he told me that I would remain on his payroll for support duties and my blog, two to five hours per week. I have to be online 8 PM - 10 PM Sunday. This is actually job security for me, in case the bank doesnt work out. If the bank does not find me satisfactory, they could demote me from project manager to project lead or just dispense with my services. The former is a possibility, but I will continue to try to live up to the banks confidence in me. I sense it is somewhat of a dilemma for my boss at the bank. If judged on results, Im doing very well indeed. But if judged on traditional project management skills, I still fall short. He says that I probably could not scale up to a team larger than eight to ten people. I do not delegate enough. Im always on the floor wiring, getting my hands dirty. Im not very comfortable in executive meetings. My bow tie is crooked and my hair is disheveled. Still, I intend to strive for improvement. Its difficult to convey this to other people in the business world, but I love this work. I enjoy working for my boss. I actually get waves of pleasure in the middle of a busy afternoon, like a runners high.
