The contaminated water problem is becoming very complicated. I’d love to summarize the recent events. 1. The start One of the huge tanks had a leakage. The volume of leaked water was 300m3. Since then, Tepco found numbers of the leakages but this 300m3 leakage has been the center of media coverage. 2. Where did it go ? The leaked water got into the near drain. The drain is connected to the Pacific, outside of Fukushima plant port. There is no dam, no filtration facilities along the drain. The leaked water should have gone to the sea straight away. The rest of water probably sank underground. 3. Groundwater contamination High level of radioactive water -Tritium is measured in the groundwater beside the tank, and the number is increasing. On 9/11/2013, vice president of Tepco admitted it got into the groundwater stream. 4. What is the after effect ? The contaminated groundwater flows to the wells. Tepco is longing for discharging the pumped water from the wells to the Pacific. The radiation density in the well water is increasing, but Tepco doesn’t admit it was contaminated because of the tank leakage. The pumped water from these wells won’t be filtrated. In short, the leaked water will be discharged to the pacific via drain, and via bypass wells. 5. How bad it can be ? There are 350 tanks of the same type and it’s increasing. The cause of this 300m3 leakage hasn’t even be verified. More leakages are to come. However, Tepco has no spare tanks to empty these 350 tanks. There are least they can do. and that’s what media don’t report about.
