The current end of the former IC Birmingham District at MP42 in Red Bay AL. This track used to connect with what is now the BNSF at Jasper, AL. It was sold to the NS in July of 1988 because the local unions refused to allow two man train crews on the pig trains out of Birmingham. Harry Bruce told everyone out of Haleyville AL he would sell this line If they didnt agree. They thought he was bluffing, he showed them he wasnt. Sad times working for Dirty Harry. The southern 40 miles from MP42 to MP82 were abandoned by the NS in 1992. The project the Southern had going a few years ago to route Illinois coal south could have easily used this route. However 20 years ago no one had the foresight and abandoned half of this line.
