The development of this lateral bend of the spine is extremely relevant. When the horse has to move on a circle, it is necessary for the fluent execution that his body is bent in such a way that it reflects the shape of the circle. The smaller the arc is supposed to be, the more the rib cage has to bend. A deviation of the haunches from the track of the forehand in the volte, which is bound to happen without rib cage bend, is called falling out with the croup, and results in an interruption of the gait. Long backed horses can bend more easily in their rib cage, but due to their length they will also require a greater bend on a circle.
