But, the choice between a and an depends on pronunciation, NOT SPELLING. 3. We use an before a vowel SOUND, even if it is written as a consonant. See the eg., an MP, an MA etc 4. We use a before a consonant SOUND, even if it is written as a vowel. See the Eg., a university, a union, a usage, a European, a useful thing and so on. ( Here, a is used before a syllable with a sound of yu. ) 5. Likewise, a is used before o, which is a vowel actually but sounded as wu. Eg., a one -rupee note, a one-eyed giant.
