The #euro, our currency! January 2014 marked the entry of Latvia as the 18th member of the euro area. The euro is perhaps the most tangible manifestation of the European #integration process. It has accomplished quite a journey to become the currency that we share today. Enshrined as a goal in the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, it was in 1998 that the participating countries were selected by the Council and that the European Central Bank was established. History was made on 1 January 1999 when 11 European Union countries locked in the conversion rates between their national currencies and the euro. A European Monetary Union was born with the Euro as a virtual, single currency, first appearing as cash in 2002. Since then the euro area has grown as other Member States met the criteria necessary for the adoption of the euro.
