The first flight attendants were nurses, added to airline crews in 1930 to calm passengers, as well as assist with the vomiting during a rough ride. The cabin crew started off wearing smocks over their nurses uniforms, but ended the decade outfitted in sharply tailored suits. Pilots were initially less than pleased to have them aboard, until they realized they would no longer have to be the ones serving coffee.
