The following are essential for an aspirant: (1) He should have profound knowledge of the path he is treading. (2) He should be fully equipped before he treads the path. That means he should discipline himself. (3) He should patiently and steadily tread his path. He should not forget his goal no matter what he does, whether he is studying, eating, or exercising. (4) The law of karma states nothing is wasted and nothing is lost. One is bound to receive the fruits of his actions sooner or later. The student should have faith that his sadhana will not be wasted. (5) Before eating, sleeping, or practicing meditation and as many times as it is convenient and possible, one should dedicate his sadhana and surrender the fruits to the Lord of life. By following these principles, the sadhaka develops awareness of the Eternal and is no longer distracted by the temporal world. He experiences the greatest of all joys and happiness, which arises in the depths and heights of his inner Self. Swami Rama Perennial Psychology of the Bhagavad Gita commentary, Chapter 6
