The following experience is one part of the motivation for my recent anti-church going post. We were invited to attend church by a guy who calls himself Wolf, which in hindsight, was probably the first indicator of a bad idea, but I live for the weird and unusual experience as I feel a good tale will surely come if I survive. I want to mention, in Nicholasville, as I assume most towns, theres at least one odd character... and ours is this guy who is dark complected, fully bearded, Osama style, wears desert combat fatiques, usually a strange hat, and Godknowswhat hanging around his neck. This guy often twirls signs advertising $2 hamburgers for a local restaurant and dresses as described...Well at the start of service, he was there, at the front of the pews dancing, arms outstretched. I knew the adventure was beginning. We already exchanged pleasantries with Wolf, his Indian spirit, and sat by him. Now Wolf was a former biker, likable guy but with a checkered past and a new convert to Christianity and liked to hug and tell people he loves them...certainly a good sentiment but I am not a hugging type and really dont like to shake hands even, for the same reasons as Howie Mandel. With Susan, my mom or sister or my sons, I am fine with hugging...anyone else, I may go with it but I am screaming inside. Anyhow, the pastor took the center of the front area of the church and made a point to mention how they wont interrupt service like some churches to pass collection plates but that they were available anytime onstage for anyone to contribute which he encouraged. That was fine and I thought thats a positive. Then their musicians, a female singer, a drummer and keyboardist starting playing...forrrrrevvveeerrr...while people did go to the plates and donate and which we did after this not so subtle and disingenuous hint...the rest of the service we stayed through was more music...the pastor asking everyone to tell 2 people 2 things they love about spring...and then maybe a couple minutes about Spring which I guess was the sermon followed by more songs longer than any by Yes. Susan didnt feel well so we left before service was over and Wolf said he understood and to call later, which we did, a few times...but he never answered or returned our calls. Clearly it wasnt the church for us but we still would have been friends with Wolf.
