The following is the 2nd excerpt from the novel “Creeltown, Alabama – A Life Once Lived.” © The Love Story That Never Ended The letters that follow were written to Eunice Barnett who was born November 19, 1913 (she would have been 13 ½ years old) from Theodore Roosevelt (Rosy) Beersdorf who was born October 09, 1907 (who would have been 19 ½ years old. Eunice saved these letters over the years and they were found in the bottom of an old steamer trunk that was given to their eldest son by Rosy. The letters are reproduced in “typed” format for easy reading. They are typed as they were written and the original spelling and punctuation is preserved . This is done not to criticize the writers, but to show the genuine thoughts of the individuals and how they wrote just like they thought. A minimum amount of punctuation and correction is provided for clarity. Rosy, in his writings, provided no punctuation and no capitalization. These letters will provide a vivid picture of the love of one man for one woman and a complete letter and a partial letter from her to him.. With verbal history from Rosy we know that their relationship started when he was 19 and Eunice was 12. These letters confirm that this is accurate. He allegedly saw her one night going into her front yard while opening a gate and he told the girl that he was walking home that the girl going through that gate was going to be his wife. There is no record of the reaction of his date. These letters carry us from age 13 ½ for Eunice and Rosy 19 ½ years to the day they got married in 1932, how they struggled during the great depression and how he sought work and even latter in 1941 after their children started coming. These letters give us a good insight as to the life and hard times that they had to endure. They also show us how Eunice was “used” by her family to take care of pregnant sisters who were married much earlier that she. Rosy was 25 years, 2 months and 15 days old, and Eunice was 19 years, 1 month and 09 days old when the two of them married on December 22, 1932. Eunice stayed home longer than any of her sisters. The two letters that follow are the two earliest ones in their dating relationship. There are 70 letters and each share the difficulties encountered during the Great Depression.
