The following message was sent to me ny Jo Jennings: my mother was a Thurbon. Will Thurbin and I share a set of three times great grandparents. Peter Thurbon and Jane Bott from East London. The difference in the spelling came from two of their sons, I believe when they were baptised. Richard Thurbon 1817-1881 my line. His younger brother Joseph, Thurbin Wills direct line. Have seen a few other variations in spelling, some very imaginative. ! ... Attached photo of the six sons of William Thurbon and Maryanne Joyce, my great grandparents. They also had five daughters. I do have a photo of the original English Thurbon export to Australia. Richard Thurbon 1817-81. He arrived in Australia as a convict, which if you are Australian now is kind of a badge of honour. He had ten sons and two daughters, that spread the Thurbon name around in a fledgling colony pretty smartly. My grandfather Richard Thurbon 1885 - 1968 is on the far right at the back. His brothers are Austin 1895-1964, Gerald 1987-1959, William 1902-1977, Stanislaus 1905-1982, and Peter 1911-1971. Their grandfather Richard James Thurbon [ convict ] was the first Australian Thurbon. He was the son of Peter Thubon 1788-1837 and Jane Bott 1800-1880. Peter was a painter, he died at 49. Peters parents were Richard Thurbon 1760---- and Mary Beard. The Family lived at 48 Saffron Hill, Holborn. Richard and Mary were married at Ramsey, Benwick. It does appear that all the the Thurbons with all the spelling variants Thirborn, Thorbone, Thorbone, Thirbion etc. came from Cambridge. Mary Beard and Richard Thurbon it seems went to the big smoke to try their luck. Richard became a broker, [ hock shop] However it does appear that our young pick pocket could read and write, and some one had taught him to use an abacus, which was not common in that era. That made him useful, and he was treated a lot better than most, until he was granted a full pardon. He then became a farmer and grazier. Does any of this fit with what you have ?
