The following two shark interactions were reported today. The Manhattan Beach incident is considered provoked or special circumstance, while the Oceano Dunes State Beach has tentatively been classified an an unprovoked interaction; Oceano Dunes State Beach — On July 5, 2014 E. E., City of Morro Bay provided the following:“An unidentified surfer was in the water between 7 and 8AM at Oceano Dunes State Beach when a shark struck his board. The surfer was uninjured but the shark left teeth marks with a bite diameter of about 11 inches. Lifeguards posted a warning advising beach goers of the attack but did not keep them from entering the water. At about 9AM Pismo Beach Lifeguards reported a shark sighting South of the Pismo Pier. Swimmers at Pismo Beach were advised of the sighting but were not kept from entering the water.” Additional information will be provided following examination of the surfboard. Manhattan Beach — On July 5, 2014 an unidentified swimmer was bitten by a 6 – 7 foot juvenile White Shark near the Manhattan Beach Pier. The following information was provided by Eric Martin, Facility Director, Roundhouse Marine Lab and Aquarium located on the Manhattan Beach Pier;“At about 8:45AM a fisherman on the pier hooked a juvenile White Shark. He had battled the fish for about 45 minutes. The shark had taken about 200 yards of line off the fishermans reel and was that distance North of the pier. At that same time a group of distance swimmers were also moving through the same area. It is possible that the unidentified male swimmer got his hand tangled in the fishing line, which caused the shark to strike him in the area of his rib-cage. He was assisted from the water and taken by Paramedics to the hospital. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.” Additional information will be posted when available. This incident is a special case and/or provoked. Additional information for these two interactions will be posted on the Shark Research Committees Pacific Coast Shark News page as they become available; sharkresearchcommittee/pacific_coast_shark_news.htm
