The foreign fighter laws will attract great attention. Civil liberties are among the most serious things a representative can vote on. What I said in the house today (exact words in video): The extended passport cancellation, 10 day passport suspension power, and introduction of police level powers to the SIS I regard as relatively benign. They do not represent a change in principle, only extent. Warrantless surveillance is different. Some will argue that there are so many safeguards that this change will make little difference, but then why change? The cute position is to shout that those who give up freedom for security deserve neither. The truth is thats exactly what all societies do, ours is among the freest the world because weve gotten the balance better than most others. So, my position is to support the bill at first reading because I believe there is enough need to send it to select committee, then we shall see whether the threats warrant could possibly justify ditching the warrant, even for 48 hours..
