The fourth chapter indicates the greater path of Jñāna Yoga, the ‘Path-of-Knowledge’, which is the only main arch-way through which all the pilgrims must pass in order to reach the Temple of the Self. Upto this arch-way, seekers living in different psychological and intellectual domains may walk their own ‘paths’, but the main gate is Jñāna Yoga through which all must pass to have Darshana at the glorious altar. This Yoga alone forms the subject of the Lord’s teachings throughout the Gita. When an individual, through an earlier training in Karma Yoga, has integrated his mind and intellect, becomes fit for the absorption and assimilation of the greater Truth, through the process of contemplation and meditation. The Blessed Lord said: I taught this Imperishable Yoga to Vivasvāna; Vivasvāna taught it to Manu; Manu taught it to Ikṣvāku. This knowledge, handed down thus in regular succession, the royal sages knew. This YOGA, by long lapse of time, has been lost here, O Parantapa (burner of the foes). That same ancient ‘YOGA’ has been taught today to you by Me, for you are My devotee and My friend. This is a Supreme Secret. श्री भगवानुवाच इमं विवस्वते योगं प्रोक्तवाहनम्ययम् । विवस्वान्मनवे प्राह मनुरिक्ष्वाकवेऽब्रवीत् ॥ ४.१ ॥ एवं परम्प्पराप्राप्तमिमं राजर्षयो विदुः । स कालेनेह महता योगो नष्टः परन्तप ॥ ४.२ ॥ स एवायं मया तेऽद्य योगः प्रोक्तः पुरातनः । भक्तोऽसि मे सखा चेति रहस्यं ह्येतदुत्तमम् ॥ ४.३ ॥ श्री भगवान् बोले मैंने इस अविनाशी योग (कर्म योग) को सूर्य से कहा था । (फिर) सूर्य ने अपने पुत्र मनु से कहा और मनुने अपने पुत्र राजा इक्ष्वाकु से कहा । हे परन्तप! इस तरह परम्परा से प्राप्त योगको इस कर्म-योग को राजर्षियों ने जाना, परन्तु बहुत समय बीत जाने के कारण वह योग इस मनुष्य-लोके में लुप्तप्राय हो गया । तू मेरा भक्त और प्रिय सखा है, इसलिये वही यह पुरातन योग आज मैंने तुझसे कहा है; क्योंकि यह बड़ा उत्तम रहस्य है । Now, Q.
