The goodwill the Royal Hobart Show generates. --------------------------------------------------------------- Bunnings Warehouse and Tasmanian construction firm Fairbrother have offered to halt work on the new Bunnings Warehouse development at Glenorchy for the duration of the Royal Hobart Show (Oct 22-25). It’s a gesture gratefully accepted by the Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania (RAST), organiser of the Royal Hobart Show. Earlier this year the RAST leased out a four hectare corner section of the 17ha Showground so that Bunnings could build a modern retail outlet. The lease of the land will generate funds to assist the RAST to completely modernise the Showground over time. The land lease does not affect the operations of the Show. “In this day and age time is money, so the offer to stop construction is greatly appreciated,” says Scott Gadd, CEO of the RAST. “It will absolutely minimise any inconvenience to showgoers, especially if the weather turns out to be windy, as is so often the case around show time.” This year is the 192nd Royal Hobart Show. Tasmania was called Van Diemen’s Land when the Show was first staged in Hobart Town, and the Port Arthur Penitentiary had yet to be built. The RAST is one of the oldest cultural institutions in Australia and the Royal Hobart Show is the nation’s oldest Royal Agricultural Show. Volunteers play a central role in organising a whole range of competitions at the Show, and this year the RAST will be saluting many of the Show’s great volunteer supporters. As many as 40 life service and long service awards will be presented during the Show, including the annual Living Legend of the Show. “We greatly appreciate the offer to stop construction work during the Show. It’s a most generous gesture which illustrates the tremendous goodwill that exists for this event in Tasmania,” says Mr Gadd.
