The government wants to review and consider the possibility of banning Facebook in Malaysia? Well, honestly, if that happens, thats a sure-fire way to lose federal governance altogether in the next GE. 15-million+ Malaysians on FB with an average of 350 friends per profile, making us one of the worlds most prominent, most connected adopters of the platform, with 50% of the countrys population subscribing to it. Why ban? Because youre alarmed by the 2,000+ serious, malicious, security-threatening rants a month? Please dont discard the whole basket just because 0.013% of eggs are bad. What more when you can identify which ones are rotten. Just take social-policing more seriously. Arrest the culprits, question them, jail them, rotan their pungkok, whatever. Instill fear amongst rumour-mongers. Make them think thrice before posting an unsubstantiated, hate-filled content. Serve appropriate punishments to those who attempt to disrupt the peace and sovereignty of our country. (Dont punish people who share or spread these contents though. Because theyre stupid. Theyre Gods defective goods. And stupid people should not be punished, but sympathized. Besides, we need the bangangs around to keep us entertained with their inability to tell the difference between fact from fiction anyway, or their lack of initiative to do research before sharing). And do remember that Facebook has done us a lot of good as well. Lessons are learnt every day. Crimes and precautionary measures are shared everyday. Criminal faces get identified. Animal abusers are publicly shamed. Charity organizations get their plights answered. We find out and mourn our favourite celebrities deaths 2 minutes after they croak. Yes, its sad that Malaysians tend to share negative, hate-filled stories more than share acts of good. But thats not cast in stone, its not destined to remain that way forever. Theres always hope. Not all of us scroll our News Feeds every morning in search of bad stuff to share; and that alone, is enough reason for you not to ban this powerful network which, believe it or not, CAN work in your favour. Just my personal dua sens worth. From your ardent, thinking supporter.
