The government was never intended to be god; deity manipulated by the whims of men. One cannot subject the freewill nature of men to the vices they are unwilling to own themselves without consequence. There is a higher law and an impartial judge; both the very embodiment of goodness. Indeed, why would anyone insist/settle for less? Perhaps they are not really interested in being good. The true purpose of government is to do good and hold accountable those who are not. If one wants to hide their lack of goodness then they should not insist the government expose their hypocrisy. You cannot make men good by law: and without good men you cannot have a good society. . . Does it not make a great difference whether I am, so to speak, the landlord of my own mind and body, or only a tenant, responsible to the real landlord?
