The great 19th century impressionist painter Claude Monet was born on this day in 1840. He lived well into the 20th century, and beginning in 1914 began a series of very large scale decorative canvases of waterlilies. His friend the French statesman George Clemenceau encouraged this project. After the Armistice, Monet offered the canvases to the French nation and it was decided that a special pavilion would be built to accommodate these works.
