The headliner indeed is an eye-catcher and of course, is basically - TopicsExpress

The headliner indeed is an eye-catcher and of course, is basically a racist slur to begin with. It caught my attention when it was shown to be by a fellow-Rotarian in our club meeting last night. But after reading the contents of the article, here is what I have to say: This is merely a reflection or reaction of one (and only one) Singaporean national who just got annoyed to the noises created by a group of rowdy Filipina maids (FDW or Foreign Domestic Workers as they call them locally), and having been to Singapore many times (not that much really as it really is an expensive city), posting his comments on a medium where he couldnt go to jail in case he expresses his real sentiments against his government, but thats another story. As a Filipino, we truly are a happy lot and yes, let us admit that we really tend to get noisy at times, but I will never agree with the term rowdy because thats too much. Western culture accepts it as being deliriously overjoyed and who doesnt want to be one? Even in the Philippines, as you board any public transport system available (bus, trains, jeeps, etc.), there are groups of people trying to top each others voice, specially when their topic is as exciting as Piolo Pascual breaking up with another actress. One thing that Mr. H fails to understand, and I dont blame him for being ignorant with our culture, is that we Filipinos very easy to talk to. In our native language: Madaling kausap ang mga Pinoy. Had Mr. H approached the rowdy group of Filipina maids as he described, and tell them politely that their noise is starting to get disturbing to the rest of the passengers, I am sure he would even get an apology and a win-win solution at the end of the day. Instead, he decided to keep the fumes steaming inside him and let it out in a venue that has no censorship, as it is his right. No quarrels there, but of course, he could have done better. We all know that a domestic workers job isnt a bed-of-roses job. A consideration on the part of Mr. H and that of his countrymen is in order here, which he failed to do. While the headliner is really catchy, I wouldnt take it as serious as it represents the minds or thoughts of the entire Singaporean community. We have to understand that as we jokingly say Singapore is a fine city, they really do have a venue where they could really shout their lungs off until high heavens, but those places are too expensive for our kababayans or fellow-countrylasses. Maybe our embassy official could come up with a campaign on how to talk to our kababayans in Singapore. In the same token, during PDOS (Pre-Departure Orientation Seminars) in Manila, all Singapore-bound FDWs be informed on how to behave in Singapore, particularly on public transports systems within the city-state.
