The history of Manila began long before the town was incorporated - TopicsExpress

The history of Manila began long before the town was incorporated on July 3, 1901. The name had been changed from Cinda sometime after the Spanish-American War ended in 1898. Twenty registered voters of the township decided to rename it in honor of the success of the Asiatic Squadron under the command of Commodore George Dewey. The town took its name from MANILA BAY, where the frist decisive battel of the war took place. [this is in the Philippines]. The streets were named after Dewey and many of his ships, including the Baltimore and the Olympia. And there you have it... thanks for the inquiry. We still have the above mentioned streets: Baltimore is known as Main by the locals; Dewey and Olympia are prominent streets as well. The original name, Cinda, was the postmasters daughters name. If you have Google Earth on your computer, you can check Manila out...there should be some photos posted there, and some also at Big Lake, which is close by. Google Earth is a free download and a great way to visit the world! Glenda Wilson Key Ford Wilson Wilson Reunion Arkansas
