The holidays will be upon us in a few short weeks. Most of us will have friends/family visiting our homes at some point. Usually deciding what to eat is the easy part; the hard part is getting your house ready for company. I have compiled a Countdown to Christmas cleaning schedule for those of you who are a bit concerned about such things. ***November - week 1 - De-clutter closets and cabinets. Lets face it, most of us have closets and/or cabinets that can use a bit of attention. By beginning with these, you free up the space you need to do that last minute, Hurry up and throw it in the closet! Its alright; weve all been there! This is also a great time to replace the batteries in smoke detectors. ***November - week 2 - De-clutter all shelves and end tales/nightstands. In our house, for whatever reason, books are frequently stacked on top of others instead of line up next to each other. Take an extra 30 minutes this week to straighten shelves, end tables, and any other areas wherein knick knacks abide. ***November - week 3 - Clean blinds/window coverings, ceiling fans, and appliances. If this isnt already something on your regular cleaning schedule, now is a great time to clean up those areas that tend to collect the most dust and grime. ***November - week 4 - Since this is the week of Thanksgiving, you will probably have loads to do and not much time wherein to accomplish all that is on that To Do list. This week lets focus on the things that scream the loudest. Scrub down the dining room table and chairs. Id hate for Aunt Rita to grab the back of a chair that is covered in jelly from last weeks breakfast. :-) ***December - week 1 - Clean doors, cabinets and knobs. With all the extra people coming and going, be sure to take some time to wipe off those extra fingerprints. Not only will you enjoy the cleanliness, but you can also help keep sickness at bay by disinfecting those handles. ***December - week 2 - Clean all the fixtures. Replace those light bulbs that burnt out three months ago :-). ***December - week 3 - Hit those dressers and toy boxes. Lets face it, Christmas is next week, and your children will need space in that already overflowing box. I actually let my children do this on their own. In our house, everyone gets two plastic sacks. As they clean out the toy box, they throw trash into the one and toys that they wish to donate into another.(I do go through the to donate bags and squirrel away some of my favorites to keep for little ones who might enjoy that toy in the future.) This allows them to choose what they want to keep and alleviates any guilt I might experience for unknowingly having thrown away their favorite toy, you know, the one they love so much, they havent touched it in six months. LOL ****December - week 4 - Clean outdoor flower beds. I put this last on purpose, because I really dislike this one. So, I usually do not do this one. Instead PRAY FOR SNOW. You know you dont want to clean them out either. Your guests have no idea how horrid they actually look when they are covered in a fresh blanket of beautiful snow! And, truly, you secretly want a white Christmas. (Sorry, all my Southern California and Florida friends, you actually have to do this one. But hey, on the bright side, you are still having beautiful weather, while the rest of us are freezing to death.) Happy Cleaning!
