The idea of the prophetic is far more popular than the execution thereof. The desire to possess and wield a particular kind of voice for justice often diminishes the real, sacrificial aspects of resisting empire. The truly prophetic is neither lovely nor attractive. It guarantees neither honorarium nor honor. It lays bare the roots of ones character and integrity. It exposes one to the disdain and disruptive power of authorities. It demands a costly examination of oneself. If, then, we would be prophetic, before we can speak truth to power, we must speak truth to self. Our yearning for social justice must be undergirded by just relations in our everyday lives. The work of the prophet is not an occasional cadence, a resounding rhetoric, or a mere mantle. It is a way of being and doing in the world.
