The insight just tells a half story... It is obvious that more education to the tourists will be able to help to fix this bad reputation of mainland Chinese tourists. However, is there a reason behind? Why couldn’t this kind of education work well over a long while in a society where education has been regarded as the most worth to invest for children? Why couldn’t some of the mainland Chinese respect others? When looking back to the history of “The Cultural Revolution” which was a social-political movement that took place in the mainland China from 1966 through 1976, it may provide some answers and potential solutions. The generation who suffered from this movement is now around 47 to 57 years old who just fit the insight reporting “that middle-aged or older tourists who have been deprived of or received little education during China’s politically tumultuous times tend to act more unruly”. The Cultural Revolution was an attempt by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to destroy the culture of the past, usually by destruction of cultural artifacts and assaults on intellectuals. This brought it directly into conflict with Confucianism, not only because Confucianism represented the past, which the CCP was trying to erase, but also because the CCP valued the state over familial and filial connections, which Confucianism emphasized over the state. The CCP also believed Confucianism to be reactionary, and therefore, required to be destroyed. Ideological cleansing began with attacks by young Red Guards on so-called “intellectuals” to remove “bourgeois” influences. Millions were forced into manual labor, and tens of thousands were executed. The result was massive civil unrest, and the army was sent in to control student disorder. As a Taiwanese who is lucky enough to escape from this suffer, I will express my sincere sympathy to them and am willing to wait them some time for the reconstruction of the civilization and social trust like what have been given in Europe to Germany which was suffered from Nazism.
