As you know, the conflict in Syria is over two years old. What began as peaceful demonstrations has turned into bloody armed conflict as a result of attempts by the Syrian government to suppress protests. The UN estimates that casualties have exceeded 100,000. As you may also know, during this unprecedented violence in Syria, the Kurdish community in that country has been trying to protect the areas in which they live and are trying to build a civil society with other Syrian groups. Public services in the Kurdistan areas of Syria, from education to health care, are being made available to the community through newly established institutions. Syrians from other parts of the country have also migrated to the Kurdistan areas of Syria seeking refuge.
